What causes abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal vaginal bleeding may be the result of a gynecological issue affecting your reproductive system or due to another medical condition. Potential causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding may include:

  • Cancer (cervical, uterine, ovarian, or vaginal)
  • Endometrial hyperplasia (excess estrogen without progesterone)
  • Uterine sarcoma
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Fluctuating hormones
  • Ectopic pregnancies
  • Perimenopause
  • Infections
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Trauma

When should I be concerned about abnormal vaginal bleeding?

Normal vaginal bleeding due to menstruation occurs on a cycle of 21-25 days as the uterus sheds its lining. Normal menstrual flow can be light or heavy, but excessive bleeding or clotting is abnormal, as is any bleeding or spotting outside of your regular menstrual cycle.

You should report any abnormal vaginal bleeding to your doctor immediately. Postmenopausal and pregnant women especially should have an evaluation to determine the possible causes.

How is abnormal bleeding diagnosed?

Dr. Taymour takes a full medical history during your examination. Further testing, including blood tests and an ultrasound, to view the ovaries and uterus may be necessary. For a closer look at the uterus, you may need a hysteroscopy. This procedure involves a tiny camera that allows Dr. Taymour to explore your uterus for signs of abnormalities.

How is abnormal bleeding treated?

Once Dr. Taymour reaches a proper diagnosis, they discuss treatment options with you. Some women may need to take supplemental iron to protect their health. Ibuprofen may also be useful in the days leading up to and during your regular menstrual cycle to reduce menstrual bleeding.

Your doctor determines additional treatment based on your age and health history and may include:

Birth control

Your doctor may prescribe an IUD (intrauterine device) or birth control pills to reduce abnormal bleeding as a hormone therapy.

Minimally-invasive procedures

Several minimally-invasive surgical options for treating abnormal bleeding are available based on your diagnosis.

D&C (dilation and curettage)

D&C is a surgical procedure where the uterine lining is scraped away. Collected tissue is then tested for abnormalities.

At Gynecology and Obstetrics Medical Group, Dr. Taymour assess your abnormal bleeding concerns and provide the highest-quality treatment possible to reduce incidents and treat the root cause.
